Newton Teleskope geben ein kontrastreiches und farbfehlerfreies Bild und sind gute Geräte für Beobachtung von DeepSky Objekte (abhängig vom Spiegeldurchmesser), aber auch für Mond, Planeten und Doppelsternen. Der Einblick mag für Einsteiger überraschend sein: um einen Himmelskörper zu beobachten man blickt seitlich, am oberen Endes des Tubus hinein.
Spiegelteleskope benötigen zwar Wartung, welche man aber leicht erlernen kann. Eine Justierhilfe (entweder einn hochwertiger Justierlaser oder ein rein optisches Cheshire Okular) ist dafür empfehlenswert - hier sollte nicht gespart werden.
